Fallout Continues Over Poor Conditions At Tex., Ala. Institutions

Calling the conditions “deplorable,” Alabama advocates are urging the state to close its last institution. Advocates say that the residents could be better cared for at a cheaper cost in group homes, reports The Birmingham News. To read more click here.

Meanwhile, the fallout continues in Texas from a U.S. Department of Justice letter last week threatening to sue the state over conditions in its institutions (see story here). Advocates are asking that admissions to the facilities be halted. And, earlier this week, some activists staged a protest in the middle of a meeting of the state agency responsible for the institutions, reports The Associated Press. To read more click here.
