Proposed Law Would Protect Native Americans With Disabilities

More than twice as many native Americans in the Navajo Nation report having disabilities compared with the rest of this country’s population. Yet, the Navajo Nation has no laws to protect adults with disabilities. Now, advocates are working to change that.

A proposed tribal law would protect individuals with disabilities from abuse, which is a big problem among those with disabilities in the tribe who are frequently mishandled or taken advantage of by their caregivers. The law would also protect these individuals from neglect, coercion, intimidation and unreasonable confinement, reports The (Farmington, N.M.) Daily Times. To read more click here.
