NY Considers New Special Ed. Diploma

For the first time in more than two decades, New York is considering creating a new diploma for special education students who are unable to complete the regular high school diploma program.

Currently too many of the state’s special education students receive a diploma called the IEP, which merely indicates that the student has completed an individualized education program. The state estimates that about 8 percent of students should be receiving IEP diplomas, but about double that number do.

Now, educators are exploring options for an alternative diploma. One possibility is to offer a career education certificate, reports WNYC, a public radio station. To read more click here.
