I have asked the school twice for access to their transitional resources and both times I was told they would be provided to my son when he turns 18. He will turn 18 in January before he graduates high school. What can I say to get the information needed to do the research prior to his 18th birthday?

I am a 19-year old with autism. I have a Tech Prep Diploma. I need a job. I need transportation to and from my job. I wish Vocational Rehab could help me with this problem.

This author touched upon all the important parts of transition: Parents and student collaborating with the schools; parents' role in teaching children to be independent; the most important person in the transition process being the student and how he needs to buy into it in order for it to work; how critical it is to start early; how the student's behavior needs to be under control; what Vocational Resources can do; etc. There was even mention of the work culture and how it can change from place to place, and how imperative it is to know what is appropriate behavior in each setting. This interview is a good synopsis of the Transition process and how a successful plan works. Thank you!
