A forthcoming memoir from the mother of an autistic savant is poised to become a feature film as well.

The book tells the story of Indiana mom Kristine Barnett and her 12-year-old son, Jacob, who was nonverbal as a toddler but now has a chart-topping IQ of 170 and studies graduate-level physics.

Barnett’s memoir is slated for release in 2013 from Random House.

Already gaining buzz with rights to the book sold in 18 countries, the memoir is now in line to become a major motion picture too.

Warner Bros. recently obtained the movie rights to the story with a working title of “Scattered Skills,” reports Variety. To read more click here.

A very intriguing story! I would caution disabilityscoop, however, to be faithful to the original articles when these summaries are created. Based on the Variety article, Warner Bros. has simply acquired feature film rights to this story. Many stories never make it to the silver screen even when the rights are held by major companies. I hope it DOES make it to the big screen, but at this point I would not say it is “headed” there. Also, the Variety article notes Jacob’s “math IQ” as 170. I’m not sure what that means insofar as the WAIS and WISC, with which I am most familiar, do not break down IQ this way. The lad is certainly a genius no matter how he’s assessed, but disabilityscoop should be careful to stick to what is reported and not draw general conclusions.
