The out-of-pocket cost of raising a child with special needs varies greatly depending on the state where a family resides, according to 2008 research by Paul Shattuck, professor of social work at Washington University in St. Louis, and Susan Parish, assistant professor of social work at the University of North Carolina.
Average annual out-of-pocket cost ranges from $560 in Massachusetts to $970 in Georgia.
