Accusations that it often takes months for kids to be evaluated for special education services are dogging the nation’s third largest school district.

In a complaint to the Illinois State Board of Education, a watchdog group says that evaluation requests for children in Chicago Public Schools often languish for months with no reply and in some cases are simply ignored.

Officials at Equip for Equality, the group that filed the complaint, say they know of hundreds of children ages 3 to 5 who have not received timely evaluations. They charge that delays can have major, long-term consequences.
