Disability advocates want autism therapies and a handful of other items included in a menu of “essential benefits” now being established by federal health officials under insurance reform.

When health care reform legislation takes full effect in 2014, insurers will be required to offer certain minimum benefits in order to participate in exchanges that will be implemented in each state to provide coverage options to those without employer-sponsored insurance. What qualifies as an “essential benefit” is currently being determined by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Now, disability advocates are working to get a variety of services included. Autism Speaks wants behavioral health services deemed essential, while advocates for those with physical disabilities want prostheses and orthotics to be part of the basic coverage package, reports Bloomberg.
