College is the exception, not the rule, for people with intellectual disabilities these days, but a push is on to change that trend.

About 150 programs have popped up across the country in the last several years aimed at bringing people with intellectual disabilities onto college campuses. The programs have varying levels of academic rigor.

And the reauthorization of the Higher Education Opportunity Act last summer put more emphasis on this growing student population by enabling them to qualify for federal grants and work study programs.
