Once a regularly dished insult, efforts to brand the word “retarded” as unacceptable are starting to see success.

Earlier this year, sex advice columnist Dan Savage backtracked on his own use of the word “retarded.” And, when the DVD version of a film called Miss March came out earlier this summer, the actor’s mouths were saying “retard” but the voices had been changed to say “stupid” or “crackhead” instead.

The Black Eyed Peas also recorded their song “Let’s Get Retarded” using the word “started” instead.

Some advocates are looking for more change, nonetheless, hoping that one day “retarded” will be a candidate for bleeping. But for that type of fundamental change, there will have to be a stronger link between the word “retarded” and the type of bigoted ideology that’s socially unacceptable, reports NPR.
