Safety fears led the National Institute of Mental Health to cancel a controversial autism study today, reports the Associated Press. The study was supposed to examine a therapy called chelation, which pulls heavy metals from the body, and had been suggested to treat autism based on the unproven belief by some that mercury in vaccines triggers the disorder.
