People with disabilities in the United Kingdom are being forced into marriages, government officials say, as a means for their families to ensure caregivers for them and, in some cases, for potential spouses to gain legal entry into the country.

As it becomes more acceptable to report and discuss forced marriage, U.K. officials say they are seeing an increasing number of people with disabilities who’ve been subjected to the practice.

Most cases involve people originally from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In many instances, the future spouse is unaware of the person’s disability until the wedding, reports the BBC. To read more click here.
